DOS Additional Vetting Procedures. On May 31, 2019, Department of State (DOS) stated that it had updated its immigrant and nonimmigrant visa application forms to request additional information, including social media identifiers, from most U.S. visa applicants worldwide. As background, on March 30, 2018, DOS indicated its plans to publish proposals regarding additional vetting procedures. These procedures include collecting social media history, previously used telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and international travel history for a period of five years and will be required from almost all visa applicants. Additional questions will include whether or not the visa applicants have been deported or removed from any country and if any family members have been involved in terrorist activities. The proposals for nonimmigrant visa applications and immigrant visa applications were published in the Federal Register on August 28, 2018. As additional details become available regarding the above, we will provide regular updates.
